WATER……… WATER…… WATER……. We can’t express it enough! During these hot months, especially mid-July through August, it’s crucial to make sure your sod is getting plenty of water and is kept as cool as possible. Below is our recommendation for watering before, during and after your sod installation. BEFORE SOD INSTALLATION: We cut your order the day of installation. We do this to help ensure you are getting the freshest cut and a fighting chance to beat the heat. We usually recommend that you lay your sod within 24 hours but during these high temps, you will want to lay out the sod ASAP. Sod is cut at its roots and rolled up therefore it dries out quickly and creates heat within the roll if it is not laid out fast. This will cause your sod to burn out and turn brown. You may want to water the ground 24-48 hours before install to help keep the roots cool and absorb more water. DURING INSTALLATION: Once you have finished laying a section of sod, you will want to start watering that thoroughly, soaking the sod all the way through and beneath the ground. After you are done laying each section you will want to let the water run until both the sod and soil are sponge-like and squishy. THE NEXT TWO WEEKS: This time is very crucial to keep the sod wet. After the first big dose of water you must continue to water regularly. Most homeowners will water their sods but not long or deeply enough. Keep watering so that it gets down to the roots and soil. Double check that all areas, especially corners, and edges are getting plenty of water. Never let the sod dry out. If the sod does not get enough water, it will turn blonde and burn out. This does not mean that it’s past saving but means you better get out there with lawn sprinklers and protect that investment!

Spring Lawn Care: Tips for a Lush, Green Lawn Spring is here, and it's time to get your lawn ready for the season! Whether you're a lawn care veteran or a newbie, these tips will help you achieve a beautiful, healthy lawn that will make your neighbors green with envy. 1. Let Your Lawn Soak Up the Sunshine As temperatures start to rise, give your lawn some time to soak up the sunshine. Be patient and allow it to wake up from its dormant state. Soon, you'll see the grass getting greener and more vibrant. 2. Rake Away Fall Leaves and Debris Start by raking any fall leaves and debris. This will allow light and fresh air to reach the blades of grass, promoting healthy growth. A clean lawn is a happy lawn! 3. Hold Off on Fertilizer and Weed Killer If you applied fertilizer or weed killer before the sod went dormant in the fall, you probably won't need to apply more just yet. Over-fertilizing can stress the grass and hinder its growth. Give it some time to recover naturally. 4. Address Bare Spots If you're dealing with bare spots and want quick results, contact us! We can help you figure out how much sod you need to re-sod or recommend the best seed to apply. We're here to ensure your lawn looks its best. 5. Tune Up Your Lawn Mower Before you start mowing, make sure your lawn mower is in top shape. Sharpen the blades, change the oil, check the air filter and spark plug, and fuel up. Refer to your owner's manual for specific maintenance instructions. 6. Watering New Sod Proper watering is crucial for new sod. In the first two weeks, keep the sod moist by watering it at least twice a day. Avoid overwatering, as this can lead to root rot. Gradually reduce the frequency of watering as the sod establishes 1. 7. Mowing New Sod Wait until the new sod has rooted well before mowing. Typically, this is around two to three weeks after installation. Ensure your mower blades are sharp to avoid tearing the grass 2. 8. Fertilizing New Sod Fertilize your new sod about six weeks after installation. Use a balanced fertilizer to promote healthy growth. Avoid applying too much fertilizer, as this can burn the grass 3. 9. Weed Control Be cautious with weed control products on new sod. Wait until the sod is well-established before applying any herbicides. This usually means waiting at least six weeks 2. By following these tips, you'll be well on your way to a lush, green lawn that will be the envy of the neighborhood !

  • If I want to pick up my order directly from the farm, what is the process?

You can call our office to verify availability and then head over to our farm to get the fresh-cut product you need for your immediate landscaping tasks. • How much advance notice do I need to provide for a sod delivery to my property?

To ensure that your grass is cut fresh and delivered at the peak of its health, we generally require a 2-day notice for all delivery orders. This lead time allows us to coordinate our harvest schedule with our fleet of delivery trucks, ensuring that the product arriving at your site hasn't been sitting on a pallet for an extended period. Timely delivery is a cornerstone of our service model, especially for clients who have coordinated a work crew to lay sod in Madison, WI on a specific date. By providing us with a couple of days of lead time, you ensure that your project stays on schedule and your new lawn has the best chance of thriving.

  • What makes the sod from DeBuck's different from what I might find at a big-box store?

The primary difference is the freshness and the growing methods we employ. Unlike retail stores where pallets may sit for days under hot sun or drying winds, our sod in Janesville, WI is cut to order. We combine over 67 years of time-tested growing experience with the latest agricultural technology to produce a dense, weed-free turf that establishes roots rapidly. When people invest in our sod in Janesville, WI they are getting a product that has been nurtured in local soil and acclimated to our specific climate. This results in a much higher success rate for the homeowner and a lawn that looks established almost immediately after installation.

  • Can your sod handle the extreme temperature fluctuations common in the Wisconsin climate?

Absolutely. Because we have been growing turf in this region since 1956, we have selected specific grass varieties that are naturally resilient to our freezing winters and humid summers. We use a blend of high-quality seeds that produce a durable, lush green carpet capable of withstanding the local weather patterns. This is why so many landscapers prefer our sod in Madison, WI for their high-end projects. Our grass is grown to be hardy and thick, which helps it naturally resist pests and diseases that often plague weaker, non-local varieties.

  • What are the most important steps I should take to prepare my soil before the sod arrives?

Proper preparation is the most critical factor in the long-term success of your new lawn. You should start by removing all existing weeds, rocks, and debris from the area. It is highly recommended to till the soil to a depth of about four to six inches and incorporate organic matter if your soil is particularly sandy or clay-heavy. Final grading should be smooth and slightly sloped away from your home's foundation to ensure proper drainage. Having the site completely ready before the delivery of your sod in Janesville, WI ensures that you can begin installation immediately, which is vital for the health of the live grass.

  • Once the sod is laid, what is the best watering schedule to ensure it takes root?

Immediate and consistent watering is mandatory for newly installed turf. For the first two weeks, the soil underneath the sod should remain consistently moist. We recommend watering early in the morning and again in the late afternoon to prevent the roots from drying out during the heat of the day. As the roots begin to knit into the soil, you can gradually transition to deeper, less frequent watering. We often tell our customers that when they lay sod in Madison, WI, they should check the moisture levels daily by lifting a corner of a roll to see if the soil beneath is damp. Proper hydration during the first 14 days is the difference between a thriving lawn and a failing one.

  • Is there a specific time of year that is best for installing new sod in Wisconsin?

One of the great benefits of sod over seed is that it can be installed anytime during the growing season, from spring through late autumn, as long as the ground is not frozen. However, spring and fall are generally considered ideal because the cooler temperatures and natural rainfall reduce the stress on the new grass. Even so, with proper irrigation, you can successfully install sod in Janesville, WI during the height of summer.
